This weekend we hosted a Christmas rendition of our Gourmet Dinner Club. Complete with ham, cookies, a Secret Santa, and gingerbread houses. When I first thought of the Christmas theme, I thought it would be easy. A classic Christmas dinner. But it turns out, everyone has completely different Christmas traditions. So the new plan was for everyone to bring something that reminded them of their classic Christmas.
New to our Gourmet Dinner Club? We have a small group of friends together for a regular dinner party. The host gets to choose the theme and provides the main course, the guests bring the appetizers and desserts (and everyone brings wine pairings).
Aside from the incredible food and company, Dan and I got to feel like real adults for a few hours since Shea was with my in-laws for the night.
We started the night with a cheese tray while Jenn and Eric cooked their scallops that they topped with this addicting bacon and clementine jam. I may have stolen a spoonful of the extra jam during one of my trips to the kitchen.
Then we had our Secret Santa, which included lots of laughs and almost some tears. We started dinner with Jenn and Eric’s lobster bisque, which is part of Jenn’s family Christmas celebrations. They made their own seafood stock and there was tons of lobster meat on the bottom of the bowl!
For the main course, I made the ham with pineapple from a recent issue of Bon Appetit. On the side was Gloria’s pineapple casserole (recipe coming soon!), green beans, and a simple salad with pomegranate.
The most exciting part of the meal (cooking wise) was the garlic rolls, which was my first successful time making rolls and they turned out incredible! It did take 4 tries to get the yeast to bloom correctly, but in the end, they turned out great.
After dinner, we had a gingerbread house making competition, boys v. girls. The timer was set for 25 minutes, and the best-decorated house won. We put the houses on Instagram for a vote and the guys won (even though they kind of cheated by using branches from the Christmas tree…)
We wrapped up the evening with one of our go-to games, Fun Employed, and Alicia’s decadent chocolate espresso pie.
