In the middle of a family vacation back in 2009 (I was barely 17 – eek), I discovered this heavenly combination. Steak and bleu cheese and onions.
A little history about our family vacations: we’re typically hiking, camping, and spending lots of time in the car traveling to exciting new places. This time, we packed up all our camping gear in NJ and flew to Las Vegas, rented a car, drove to the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon for a night. Then back through Vegas and Death Valley (in August!), through Sequioa National Forest to camping in Big Sur and exploring Monteray Bay, to Yosemite.
Toward the end of this adventure, and after more than a few days of camping, we had a night in a hotel (meaning: showers, eating out, and a reallllly good nights sleep). In this little, tiny town we all got dressed up (jeans, rather than hiking clothes) and went out for dinner. I ordered a salad with grilled steak, bleu cheese, caramelized onions, candied pecans, tomatoes and balsamic. I was in heaven. Absolute heaven. I’ve dreamt about this meal. Who knows if it was the location, the long-awaited relaxation, or the combination of delicious flavors, but I was smitten.
This has become my go-to dinner for guests and is perfect year round.
